Magazine Front cover

Software learning and development

Photoshop

Before I started this course I already had sufficient knowledge on how to use Photoshop and how o fashion the tools to my advantage in order to create a very successful magazine cover. With the additional skills I have learned from my teacher I am sure to create a very professional type front cover not only for my school magazine but for future course such as, my music magazine.

InDesign

Unlike Photoshop I have no knowledge on how to use this software but learning how to use the tools was not extremely hard infact it was quite straight forward, this was  because InDesign was made by the same company that made Photoshop so must of the tools were either the same or worked in almost the exact same way.

Analysis of responses

Analysis of questioner responses

1. How often do you read magazine?

This shows that from the sample of 6th formers I gave to read my survey only s majority read magazines and even then they do not read it all the time.

2.What would you want to see as the cover image of a school magazine?
From this sample it seems that my readers would want a whole variety of subjects and items on the front cover rather than just one cover star.

3 Please state any themes you want to be discussed in the school magazine for the magazine to be more appealing?

From this question it seems most of the people I questioned want a holiday themed issue, such as Christmas or Halloween

4. How much will you be willing to spend on a school magazine?

From this sample it is evident that my target audience are not interested in paying any money for the magazine.

5. Please state where you would expect to find a copy of the school magazine?

A majority of the answers given to this question stated that people would expect to see a copy of the school magazine in the school office or library

6.  Which target audience/ demographic do you think the school magazine would better suit?

From this sample it is evident that I need to make the demographic for my magazine both parents and students.

To complete I think that it is safe to say that the results of my questionnaire where quite successful, I have now gain the correct type of knowledge need to successfully create a school magazine which i will be perfectly tailored for my wild range demographic.

Photoshoot

Photoshoot and analysis

First shoot
I intially wanted to start my shooting with a long shot of the main school building, this connotes the foundation of the school because this is the oldest building present in the school history, this also connotes the bonds that has strengthen between past and previous students and teachers

Second shoot
For my second shot I decided to do a medium close up shot of the door to the main building, I decided to do this because it connotes the invitation for pupils to join the school and becoming a member of the Beaverwood family, this type of image could be used for an induction day or opening evening leaflet to persuade students to join the school.

Third shoot
For my third shoot I decided to take another longshot of the main school building but from a different angle, this was done to show a better perspective of the school building.

 Forth shoot
For my forth shoot, I decided to do a shot focusing on a 6th former in front of the 6th-form common room. This connotes an average student taking pride in their school.

Final Content blueprint

Magazine Ideas

Initial Ideas

I want to base my school magazine appearance on the school colours, I had done my research and found out that the school colours consist of navy blue, green and yellow; I decided to alter the school colours for my magazine so instead of uses the original school colours i have decided to use the colours blue and white instead, I believe this is a lot more neater than the original colour concept and it looks alot more smarter which in turns suits the whole ideology of a school magazine.

I also wanted to create a Title that would be catchy and one that rolls of the tongue really easily but I was stuck for ideas. I wanted  to use a word that was well know by youths but also had to be formal enough to be understood by adults; so I settled for the word "Buz" I believe this word fitted by criteria quite impressively, finally to make the name more associated with the school I decided to take the Beaver out of "Beaverwood" and add it to the "Buzz" to create "BeaverBuzz" which would now serve as the title of my school magazine.

Finally I had to decide on which type of font to use for my magazine, since I knew  that typography was a very important part of trying to reach to your target audience, which were girls  between the ages of 11-18 since Beaverwood is a girl school, so I decided to use a girly font but then I realized that this may persists as a problem seeing as there are some boys in the 6th form and using an overly girly font could be seen as unprofessional and thus would not be accepted by the parents who may read the magazine. eventually I decided to use the "Showcard Gothic" font because this font is the fits the criteria above, it has a sense of girly-ness but yet not overly girly and somewhat professional looking.

Audience Theories

Audience Theory and Understanding

Overview
A media audience may be as small as one person or may be on a much larger scale like billions of people from around the globe watching events like the Royal wedding live on TV.
Audience have a complex relationship with the products they consume, Media companies and producers intend for their audience to react to a product in a certain way but in actual fact each and everyone reacts to a piece of text and media in their own individual ways.
It is common that media audiences could be consuming different types of music at the same time; like listening to music on their phones, watching TV or chating via the internet, infact it is common for a family to sit down together and watch TV at the same time.
Producers, broadcasters, advertisers and other members of Media companies organize their Media consumers into different identified groups based on how much they earn and even their life styles, this makes it easier for producers to target a specific audience. it should also be noted that most media products where made to make profit, so producers and co are more likely to target those with spending power.

THE THEORIES

The Hypodermic syringe theory
This is a theory that states that the mass media and other forms of propaganda can inject and sometimes even force down certain messages into the public's mind. This is certainly true, the power shared by the Government and the Multimedia strands are immanence and sometimes frighting.
The audience is seen as a single mass that passively receives the text and media this is evident by people being "addicted" to video games and certain other uses of the internet, in fact advertising is known to be so powerful that certain products such as cigarettes are banned from bring advertised on television.

The uses and Gratification theory
This is a theory that states the audience is highly active in making use of the media for a range of purpose designed to satisfy needs such as entertainment, information and identification. Technically an individual has the power over what they choice to believe is true, and selects the media text that best suit her needs and her attempts to satisfy those needs

Magazine Conventions 3

Magazine Conventions 3

Through the magazine cover it's clearly evident that the colour scheme of the school is, the editors had dilebratly made the most outstanding feature of the magazine cover red as it dominates the entire page, to highlight that this is the national colour of the school, this is furthermore proven by the uniform worn by the girls seen on the mise en sense is red.
The Editors have craftily used the rule of Z to bring attention to the large center image of the magazine, the mise en sense  of the image show the pupils and teachers posing together on a trip to and Asian country, this connotes two different meanings, one conotion and analysis is that the school has cleverly used the image to give an insight to the readers how much money the school owns and possibly the high education sector status that the school holds. Another completely different conotion of the center image could connote the unity and peace that is shared between the students and teachers which could be a factor missing in other schools.

The Masthead of this magazine makes it evident that this is a Magazine for a private school of some sort this is evident through the type of font that the editor as incoorpareted the masthead into, a font like ths font could only be described as "fancy". The schools high status is once agasinst highlighted in the masthead, theis is due to the text "Independant Schools" being written in bold this was possibliy done to boost the schools status as an "independant school" which futhermore establishes the high status of the school  with the readers.
Besides the magazine issues distribution date written in the upper right there are plenty more indication presented in the magazine cover to indicate that is is ofcourse an Autum issue. The indicators includes the image of the trees with the orange and brown leaves falling to the ground, this image is normally if not always directly linked with the Autum season. More indications incule the attire worn by tghe cover stars, this incluides the jackets, and scarfs, one final indication of the season would be the overall colour scheme of the magazine; although whte is the only colour used for the Masthead and etc, the colour scheme of the mise en ense sure does point to the season being Autum, for example some of the rcognised colours on the cover are browns and oranges, which are colours which are always associated with the season of Autum.
The image of leaves falling to the grown could conote the end of Sumer the joyful season and the begining of Autum and a new school year.

Magazine Conventions 1

Magazine Conventions 1

The mise en sense of this magazine denotes a heavily based sports school this is evident through the pictures illustrated on the page. The first one image on the cover denotes      a longshot of the school football team locked deep in a match whilst the other two images denotes the school team during training altogether these images connote a sense of sportsmanship and competition throught the whole school.

The colour scheme of this magazine consist of a lime shade of green and white this ties in with the fact that the school is a Christian school to connote the purity and righteousness of the school. The colour scheme is constant throughout the entire front cover and possibly the rest of the magazine it is also made evident that the colour scheme is also used as the actual school colours e.g. colour of the school uniform and colours of the PE kits and football uniforms.

The Masthead of the magazine “EAGLE” is made big and bold on purpose in order to catch the reader’s attention as they lay there eyes on the cover page, the colour of the masthead is made green to tie in with the school national colours.
